How Long Should You Burn a Candle?

How Long Should You Burn a Candle?

Lighting a candle really does change the vibe. One spark and suddenly the room feels warmer, softer, just better.

But here’s the thing: how long should you actually keep it burning? It’s not just about safety (though that matters); if you want your candle to last and burn well, timing matters too.

At Serendipity, we pour every soy candle by hand. We want you to get a steady, clean burn. Still, a little attention makes all the difference, from the first light to the last bit of wax.

That first burn matters

When you light your candle for the first time, let it burn until the melted wax hits the edges of the container. Usually, that takes two to four hours, depending on the size.

Why do this? Soy wax actually has a “memory.” If you blow out your candle too soon, the next time you light it, the wax will only melt up to where you left off, and you’ll end up with a tunnel down the middle. Letting it melt all the way across the top means your candle will last longer and burn more evenly.

How long after that

After the first burn, two to four hours is the sweet spot each time. That’s enough for the wax to melt evenly, but not so long that the jar gets too hot.

If you leave it burning for too long, the wick might start to mushroom. You’ll see extra soot, a flickery flame, and the candle just gets messy. If the flame starts looking extra tall or wild, blow it out and let it cool before lighting again.

Quick burn time guide

Different candles need different times to melt across the top. Give each size the time it needs to melt all the way across, and you’ll avoid tunneling, plus you get a cleaner, even burn every time.

Here’s a quick rundown:

  • Tealight: 30 minutes–1 hour

  • 6 oz tin: 1.5–2 hours

  • 8 oz jar: 2–3 hours

  • 16 oz jar: 3–4 hours

Candle Safety 101

Before you light up, put your candle on a flat, heat-resistant surface. Keep it away from drafts, pets, or anything flammable.

Trim your wick to about a quarter inch before each burn. This keeps the flame steady, cuts down on smoke, and helps your candle last.

And when you’ve got about half an inch of wax left, it’s time to call it quits. Burning past that point can overheat the jar.

A little candle care goes a long way

Candle care isn’t complicated. Just remember to trim the wick and keep an eye on how long you’re burning it.

Your candle will last longer, smell stronger, and give you the best burn.
